Can you explain the green bag.
Assuming you mean the one at dinner. That is a “cook-in-cozy” by packit gourmet. It’s basically an insulated lunch pail that hydrates your food better in cooler temps. We rarely carry it now unless we are winter camping.
I absolutely love your videos of Isle Royale. I'm hoping to start planning a trip for next year. So many details and logistics as we're coming from SWVA.
@@blagow1 let us know if you need any help. Lots of good resources out there too.
@@HusbandWifeOutdoorLife Wow, thanks for the quick reply. I'm quickly making my way through your videos. LOL.
@@blagow1 glad you’re liking them!
@@HusbandWifeOutdoorLife I watched your 2nd trip several years ago and I've been trying to find you again. Very detailed and informative videos. Thanks!
What month did you all go this time?
@@blagow1 this trip was July
Did you see anyone with dogs out there?
@@tjyjmusic not that I can recall
exciting trip! 🤘
@@NothernNate Sure was!
That first beaver dam in 2018 was a doozy, if you went right instead of left over the dam.
@@mjbachman3027 sure was! We went right haha. Followed a moose path pretty sure.
Very very cool
Wondering if you remember if these rustic sites would be ok to just bring a wagon with you? Planning to camp with my 2 year old and ideally I'd like to just load up a wagon with our gear and have a quick walk to the site.
Yea the ones near the parking lot are easy short walks. Doable with a wagon.
@@HusbandWifeOutdoorLife wonderful! thank you! Your video helped me convince myself that I could do with with a toddler. Exciting!
Totally. Have fun!!
I build , but....
Surely they will come!
How quick after jump do you clean your boxes out? Ever had a second brood or a box reused in the same year?
We’ve had up to 3 broods in same box. A new duck will move in almost immediately if we leave them up. This year we took them down as soon as they both jumped because we need our backyard for a couple events and we didn’t want to spook a nesting duck. It’s also nice to be able to use our deck and grill outside without disturbing them. Each year we make the decision based off of how early they get started and when we want our yard back. Latest jump for us was 4th of July.
Excellent .
Thank you!
@@HusbandWifeOutdoorLife
you guys are definitely doin it right. high survivability . they all hatching and making the jump easily. well done
Thanks Dan. We do our best to make sure they are successful. They pretty much own our back yard all spring into early summer.
Impressive amount of babies!
She’s got her hands.. er wings full!
Great video! I live near Detroit, but do most of my backpacking out west and I really want to find some decent places closer to home, but have been struggling. I plan to go here this weekend actually, but do you have any other recommendations for good backcountry camping like this within a few hours of Detroit, other than the Manistee River Trail? Any help would be so greatly appreciated!
Enjoy your trip. The NCT runs the entire length of Michigan and has a bunch of great dispersed camping options!
@@HusbandWifeOutdoorLife Awesome, I’ll check it out! Thank you!
Thanks for all the links!! Super helpful info to plan our trip
Our pleasure!
Awesome video! This is my third year with ducks in my two boxes. Sometime next week is my guess for the jumping day, last year our grandkids watched from our cabin. Hopefully some day will get a camera for our boxes. Thanks for sharing...Ken
This is FABULOUS!!!
Thank you so much for posting these. We currently have a mama and her 13 eggs in our yard ans she is brooding, leaves the same times twice a day and I dont like to disturb her but I always try to casually walk by acting like I dont see her just to make sure all is well. I had so many questions and thanks to your videos, most were answered❤🦆🐣❤
I’m so glad our videos helped! Good luck to your brooding hen! Let us know if you have any other questions. Our boxes are filling up again this year too.
@@HusbandWifeOutdoorLife Thank you so much!! I tell you, lol, I get laughed at because she made her nest under the kids playset that they rarely use so one day while she was out I cut up an old outdoor rug and wired it to the playset to she had some shelter because of all the animal activity we have wonder in our yard at night. She has had her eggs eaten for the last several years so I wanted to help her be as hidden as possible so she just waddles in under the steps to the playhouse and be safe. So, lol, when it rains I ran out there and put outdoor mats ontop so the rain wouldnt drench her and her precious eggs. Again, I'm laughed at because obviously they are animals and are use to the element but here in Indiana our weather is so unpredictable, I just wanted to help them have a successful season and hopefully she can return to same spot next year. Sorry for the rant but I know you guys will understand the method to my helping mama duck madness😁😁🦆🦆🐣
Is she a woodduck or a mallard?
@@HusbandWifeOutdoorLife Mallard
@@ang8158 they are notorious for nesting in the strangest places! Haha. You’re doing great keeping an eye out for her. Do you have the space to install a mallard tube by next year? She would probably use that and help keep her eggs protected a little better.
cool
Raise the bottom of the nest so that the little ducks can jump easy and won't get stock inside!
Then they will be susceptible to predators. The height is specific such that raccoons can’t reach in. Some of our other videos show how that works. It’s intentionally deep.
Got it!
Can you share the kind of camera you used?
Inside of the box is a green backyard nest cam. We honestly don’t recommend them. More hassle than they are worth, but the market options for nest cams are thin.
Will you be on the Island in 2024
Not this year. But we have another michigan long hike booked
@@HusbandWifeOutdoorLifeI'm going twice for the first time! Drop off at Malone Bay on 8-3, then on to South Desor Lake Campground, then Washington Creek Campground, then the Greenstone Ridge Trail to Rock Harbor. Back on Isle Royale later in late August into September for a Minong Ridge Trail from Washington Creek Campground to McCargoe Cove, and down to Moskey or Daisy Farm, and then Rock Harbor.
When is your next trip to IR? 2024?
Not in 2024. Not sure exactly. We will be back eventually. Quite a few spots we still want to hike on the island.
Awesome video. What type of camera? Looking to add cameras to my box but the router is a good 200 ft away
Thank you. The outside of the box footage is an older model wireless security camera with great range. The inside the box footage is greenbackyard nest cams. It’s a power over Ethernet style so we have long lines of cable running back to our router. This box is about 171’ from the house the other is about 200’. Plus all the wire run through the house to the router. So it’s quite a ways. That being said the greenbackyard cams are not easy to work with. They are not worth the cost point. But outside of ring cams that’s the only option on the market for POE.
What campground is this
Blind lake.
What backpack is your husband have on
Both our day packs are Osprey escapist 20L
Another great video
Thanks again!
Love it great job
Thank you!
Why don't they allow you to hang hammocks in the shelters?
Safety. The structure isn’t built for it and they don’t want anyone getting hurt. There’s also nothing on the inside to lash too and they don’t want folks adding hardware. There’s been a few hammock accidents on the island already. The island is just remote enough that it’s just better to be safe about it. Search and rescue can take hours or days.
Very nice thank you for making this. Very informative 👍
Glad you liked it. Thanks for watching.
We that’s a easier jump than in the wild of 20-30 feet above the water outta a tree den/nest hole. Maybe install some more mesh on the sides of the box near the front of the hole like you got on the front to give them more climbing surface to grab hold of ? Great successful hatch video 😁👍🏼
My first word of my comment was supposed to Be “ WELL” not We. Stupid autocorrect 😂
It is a nice short drop for them! We’ve thought about the extra mesh. There’s always one duckling trying the jump on the wrong side.
Hi, I’m waterfowl ProDucktion. I love your nest box videos. I did one very similar. Definitely need to put some predator 9:19 guards on those nest boxes. Keep up the good work.
Already have them on. This video is one of our older ones. Our later videos show the improved boxes! Thanks for the comment.
Enjoy your videos, what do you use for camera setup
POE Green backyard nest cams. I don’t recommend them actually. Pretty unreliable.
I witness two geese kill an entire wood duck clutch when the chicks came out of a wood duck box. We just keep the wood ducks around now
Oh wow!! Thankfully no geese have been around really during jump days but I’ll keep that in mind. Blue herons will do the same. They eat the ducklings whole.
It would be good to compare the protein and carbohydrate counts.
We will be sure to include those going forward. Thanks for the comment!
I deeply dislike the backpackers pantry lasagna but I thought I was the only one. I was weirdly invested in this taste test. 🤣🤣🤣
Haha!! 🤣 that’s funny.
Hi Matt and Ashley, Did you consider the gossamer gear two?
We did not. I don’t believe it was available when we purchased our triplex. Personally the size looks to be better for a single person vs two. We like our space haha 😂. It looks like a solid option though. Other downsides for me are that it’s nylon/ sil-nylon, heavier than Z packs triplex (less room and more weight), and I’m not a fan of the door shape. I like the the fact that the whole side wall zips open on the triplex.
@@HusbandWifeOutdoorLife thanks! I wondered if that was the reason. We love your videos, thanks for making them.
@@sherrysavage3636 thanks so much for watching!! Means a lot to hear that you enjoy it.
The orange painted arrows left by the Park employees in the late 1960's/early 1970's when the Minong was a fire trail between the fire towers and not an official trail, are great navigation aids.
Cool stuff
@@HusbandWifeOutdoorLife Duane from Wise Old Man of Isle Royale pointed them out to me in early August. I didn't notice them in 2018 when I hiked it solo.
@@mjbachman3027 yea I never noticed them. Interesting!
I really like the peak refuel granola (mountain berry is my fave). These are so convenient, but oof, the cost.
Our thoughts exactly. $12 for a single meal…
@@HusbandWifeOutdoorLife yeah, I do like them for overnight / weekend trips, but for anything longer they don't make much sense IMO.
Could you remind me where you purchase the unrefrigerated cheese from Wisconsin please.
@@lindaoverkamp4305 we used to purchase them from packit gourmet’s grocery section. There’s been times where they didn’t have it in stock and had to search the company name to find them. They are getting harder and harder to come by.
Enjoy the content you guys make. Im really intrigued about the boat you guys have. Who makes it and where did you get it?
Hi! It’s a Grumman Sportboat. It’s no longer manufactured. We bought it from the first owner who put it up for sale online. It’s a duck hunting and fishing boat for us, but worked well for this trip. Very stable!!!
Saw your banner outside the cabin at Rivermouth campground so I thought I'd check out your videos. Nice work.
Awesome! Thanks for stopping by. My parents booked the cabin and we were on the site next door. Was a fun little trip. Hope you had a good time in the UP!
Great video Ashley and Matt. Liked how you captured the mist near the falls. Hope you two are doing well and I would love to see some videos of your Michigan autumn. Thanks for sharing and ATB Mike.
Thanks so much Mike! That mist was pretty awesome.
Great content! Love the falls!
Thank you! Us too!
Your missing the iron.
That wasn’t the point. 🤷
Thank you for sharing this! I have been looking at camping here for a while… Looks awesome! Happy anniversary!!
Thank you! It’s a cool little spot.
My Dad and I have been going to Isle Royale for the past three years now and have had a blast. We eat meals from Mountain House, and our favorite is the Chili Mac
We do love the classic chilly Mac. It was a staple for us for a long time.
We've camped there s few times, it's a great spot!
It’s pretty nice. Wish it was a further walk back in but you can loop it up with nordhouse to make a longer hike. Definitely a beautiful spot.
Those boats are out there trying their luck for salmon. I also follow a "Michigan Fishing" site and supposedly the "bite is on"! (Love that you're still using that tent!)
They must’ve been catching! Lots of them out there. And we love that tent!!
LOL at the 8:52 mark you said you were headed to a very special spot to have your morning coffee... then you cut to... OUTHOUSES! LOL LOVE IT
Hahahaha. Glad someone sees the humor ;)
Happy Anniversary! Nice to see y’all back on the trails.
